"When you sow a seed once, you will reap a single harvest. When you teach the people, you will reap a hundred harvests."
--Kuan Chung

Teaching and learning go hand in hand... like two sides of the same coin. As educators, we are well accustomed to considering the value of teaching and learning, but our discussions are almost always in reference to students.  That is understandable and necessary, but we also need to carefully consider how to build the capacity of our teachers to serve more students more effectively over time. How frequently do we consider the value of teaching our professionals?  How often do we provide professional learning activities that are targeted, coherent and research-based?

Traditional professional development, including one-stop training sessions or off-site sessions that are disconnected from the daily work of our professionals, simply is not effective in supporting organizational change.  Educators don't need more information.  Information abounds; it's virtually at our fingertips 24/7. What educators need is learning. They need professional development that is teaching - not preaching. Professional learning should be sustained, collaborative and job-embedded.  Anything less is just a matter of scattering seeds to the wind.  A few seeds may take root, but there will never be a bountiful crop.

Your limited professional development dollars should be used to promote authentic professional learning, targeted to the unique priorities of your organization. McCoy Educational Consulting, LLC, will work with you to design professional learning activities that support your leadership goals and organizational priorities and apply research-based methods that will support meaningful changes in your school system. Rather than scattering your resources, focus your resources them to 'teach the people' so that your students can reap the benefits of your investment.
