I recently learned of a progressive organization that is transforiming education by making evidence-based reading instruction available worldwide! Cardinal Reading Strategies, LLC, provides intensive instruction to students through The English Code Language Training System. Any student with internet access can now receive high quality instruction that will build the literacy skills they need to succeed in school and in life. I was so intrigued by this new option, that I asked Dr. Walter E. Dunson, Ph.D., who created the system, to describe it for my readers. I hope you enjoy his contribution and that you will consider accessing this phenomenal services for your students when needed!

"At Cardinal Reading Strategies, our primary objective is to provide tools, goals, and structure that meet the needs of students who require remediation in the reading or spelling of the English language.  Utilizing multi-sensory, evidence-based, instructional methods, we provide a systematic and forensic approach to mastering the English language.  With this process, students can be shown the phonetic nature of the English language and the proper structure of the written language.  Our system, The English Code Language Training System, is an Orton-Gillingham-based language training system that teaches to a student's strengths while seeking to improve weaknesses through explicit and systematic phonics instruction and will foster in your students the ability to forensically master reading, writing, and spelling.  The Orton-Gillingham approach is an intensive, sequential phonics-based system that teaches the basics of word formation before whole meanings.  Our system incorporates auditory, visual, and tactile-kinesthetic instruction with highly interactive, digital content.  This multi-sensory approach places students in position to master the eighty-five percent of the English code that is phonetic.  Further, and most importantly, it allows English language learners to make intelligent choices towards mastering the remaining fifteen percent of the English code that must be analyzed in order to be applied properly.

We provide highly interactive, multi-sensory language training sessions online via GoToMeeting web conferencing software.  With this premium software, students can, not only, view our desktops, but also, manipulate things on our desktops when we turn over the controls to them.  With our online sessions, students receive multi-sensory reading remediation or primary reading instruction within the privacy of their own homes.  From start to finish, our language training sessions incorporate all three neurological pathways that humans use to learn (visual, auditory, and tactile-kinesthetic).

In this digital age, parents no longer have to battle local traffic or the schedules of multiple sports teams and activities to get their son or daughter to a reading lesson.  Modern, mobile technology is sweeping the world and allows for effective language training to take place "virtually".  All that is required is a headset with microphone, a laptop with broadband internet access, and the WebEx software (free to download and install).  That's it.  With these few simple ingredients, we can conduct interactive, engaging, language training sessions anywhere in the world.  From our office in Maryland, we have worked successfully with students as far away as Tblisi, Georgia, in the former Soviet Republic.

While the concept of online language training may be new to some parents, current reading research has validated computer-based language training.  Read the PDF from the Australian Journal of Learning Disabilities, “Evaluation of Computer-Based Programs to Teach Reading and Spelling to Students with Learning Difficulties”.

Each phonics concept studied in The English Code Language Training System is supported by an interactive, digital presentation which provides multisensory instruction for the presented concept. There are a total of 122 individual digital presentations that consist of well over 8000 drill cards.  To maintain the integrity of the system, the 122 digital presentations are used in-house and are provided to parents and teachers who attend our training course; however, we do provide an E-Learning Portal for parents who wish to provide reinforcement without attending our training course.

The sixty-eight lessons in our E-Learning Portal are divided into eight courses.  Each digital lesson is an mp.4 AVCHD video, encoded with H.264 video and AAC audio codecs.  As the digital lessons contain audio and animations and are self-guiding, parents with or without a language training background may easily provide a systematic and forensic reinforcement to mastering the English language for all students who are struggling with language acquisition.

Parents, teachers, and students may stream our videos on computers, laptops, tablets, and smart phones.   All that is required is an internet connection.  Finally, science-based reading instruction on demand and on the go!

Lastly, you will find that, in The English Code Language Training System, there are no cute little animals, funny faces, games, or anything else to distract the student from the task at hand.  This curriculum is not designed to entertain.  In its purest form, our system seeks to explicitly and systematically teach the intrinsic relationship between sounds and the symbols that represent them in the English code."
